Chaplains Report:

There is no Chaplains report in this issue as our Chaplain is on vacation. We will miss him,but wish Father Mike a great and restful vacation, and are looking forward to his column in May

Editors Column:

It was great to see all of our Brother Knights who turned out each Friday during Lent to make our Fish Dinners a great success. I dont believe that there was one bad comment from any of the diners. In fact, they were hoping we would continue to have events as this.  It is this spirit of cooperation that will enable our Council to grow in Brotherhood and help us to continue to find new members.

I thank Brother Pecilanas for the new heading for this newsletter.

How About the Knights of Columbus

Two new Knight of Columbus Councils were formed in the Sarasota/ Bradenton area in 2003. St Patrick Council #13307 was formed at the St Patrick Parish on Bee Ridge Road in March 2003. Cosmos Damien Council # 13341 was formed at the Lady of Angels Parish on 12905 State Road 70 East in Bradenton in May 2003. Within a year, the two councils have added 53 NEW members to the K of C organization. St Patrick Council, with a roster of 77 members in less than one year, contributed with 27 New members. The others were either transfers or reinstatements also mostly from out-of-state councils. Cosmos Damien Council, with a roster of 87 members in less than one year, contributed with 26 New members and 61 transferees or reinstatements also mostly from out-of-state councils. Overall,  the two new Councils with a combined roster of 164 members have given new life to the K of C organization in this area of Southwest Florida.  This does not undermine or lessen the relevance, influence, and leadership in the regional K off C organization that Our Lady of Victory Council #3358 in Sarasota, with more than 650 members and DeSoto Council in Bradenton , have had and continue to have in the Sarasota/Bradenton area.  It is without doubt that the combined efforts of recruiting New members and expanding the local membership with reinstatements and out-of-state transferees helped to make District 34 the number one District in the State. Congratulations, Vito Bellini, FDD, Ron Foley, DD, Chuck Biondolillo, GK Council #13307, Anton Swihura, GK,  Council 13341, and Lenny Anzalone,  GK Council #3358.

With the March 29th commemoration of the 123rd anniversary of the foundation of our order by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven CT, it is only fitting that we rejoice with the outstanding growth that the K of C organization has experienced in the past twelve months in the Greater Sarasota/ Bradenton area.

The St Patrick Council has also given new life to our Msgr Charles Elslander Assembly #0167 by adding 14 new 4th degree members and two new members to its Color Corps within the past twelve months. In the fiscal year 2003-2004, which ends June 30th 2004, the Color Corps of Sarasota and Bradenton Assemblies have provided greater public visibility of the Knights of Columbus  in the Sarasota/Bradenton area by participating in 36 public and private activities.

A Knight of Columbus is a man of distinction. By having made the decision to join the K of C order, he has made a commitment to support and to defend the Catholic Church and its Clergy. He has committed to provide security for his family, to support his community and his fellowmen, particularly those in need. He enjoys the camaraderie of his fellow Kof Cs from his and from other councils at any K of C gathering. He participates selflessly in the activities of his council and/or assembly. He promotes his council by recruiting new members and takes every opportunity to highlight the noble role that the K of C organization provides to his community.

Throughout his journey to Knighthood, he is reminded of the Christian tenets of charity, unity, brotherhood and patriotism, which are the principles of our order. Asa Christian and as a Catholic ma, he does not pay favors to friends over other deserving ones. He sees no difference in his fellowmen regardless of their social or economic status. He does not distinguish between the rich and the poor, the professional or the tradesman and treats all his fellowmen alike. He has a clearly defined Christian and Catholic mission. He is proud to be a Knight of Columbus and believes in and abides by the Fundamental principles that have made the Knights of Columbus Order a model fraternal organization of Catholic men for nearly one and a half centuries. He wears the K of C emblem with pride in his lapel. He is a Knight of Columbus.

Recruiting Youth A Top Priority

By Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

  Published in KNIGHTLINE 3/18/04

On Palm Sunday, April 4, 2004, the Church will celebrate the 19th annual World Youth Day and commence a yearlong program that will climax in Cologne, Germany, in the summer of 2005, when the 20th international World Youth Day is held.

In his message to youth for this World Youth Day, Pope John Paul II said Dear young people, let yourselves look into Jesus eyes, so that the desire to see the light, to enjoy the splendor of Truth may grow in you. He continued: Do you, dear young people, want to contemplate the beauty of this face? If so, he said, do so in silence and in the Eucharist.

Our teenagers and young adults lives are pretty noisy, when you stop to think about it.  For those of you parents with teens or college-age sons and daughters at home, you know what I mean. There is the noise from cell phones, and computer games, and from music and TV.

Can we Knights do anything to still some of that restlessness, to bring peace and quiet to our young peoples lives? I think we can, specifically through our program of eucharistic adoration and our Divine Mercy Hour of Prayer service.

Before the school year is over, I suggest you develop a program for the young men and women in your community. It could be an evening of eucharistic adoration and devotion, or it could be a special invitation to them to attend your Divine mercy prayer service.

This invitation will show them that they are welcome members of the parish. For many, it may be the first opportunity to participate in a holy hour with silent adoration before the  Blessed Sacrament. Similarly, it may be the first time they learn about Christ the Divine Mercy and the special graces awaiting those who prayerfully say, Jesus, I trust in You.

There are ,of course, other benefits to hosting programs for young people. By having your council reach out to them, they will begin to see the Knights of Columbus as an organization that values them and their contributions to the Church and community. Those eligible for membership should be asked to join, and those graduating from high school should merit special consideration as prospective members.

The young men in your community and in your parish and especially in your own familyare future Knights. They are the Orders future leaders. They are, in short, the Orders future.

Between this World Youth Day and the next, Make youth recruitment a priority.

Vivat Jesus!

Council #13307 Ladies Auxiliary

Dear Ladies

At our April meeting we welcomed a new member, Stella Larkin, to our auxiliary.  Were happy to have you aboard, Stella! We now have 22 paid-up members

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 6, at 7 PM in the Parish hallthe same time the men have their meeting, so Ladies, please come and join us and ride in with your husbands.

We are in the planning stages for the following events. We discussed having a fashion show, special entertainment, and perhaps a dance. It would be appreciated if we could have the entire membership attend our meetings for your suggestions and ideas, so that our events can be successful.

I would like to thank Jenni Mcginn who donated her winnings on the 50/50 money back to the auxiliary for deposit. Also many thanks to the ladies that donated cakes for the fish dinners.

Last, but not least, a special thanks to Marie Becker for showing us her beautiful quilts and how she makes them. Hopefully, we can make one (with her guidance) to raffle off as a fundraiser. Thanks to you , Rosalie Ferlise, for your monetary donation to help us get this project started.

If you know of any member that is under the weather, please call our sunshine lady Josephine a call at 379-0597.

Hope to see all of you at the next meeting.

Remember that happiness sneaks through a door that you didnt know was open.

Let us all pray for peace. God Bless and Happy Mothers Day

Loretta L. Naimo, President

Fraternal Benefits

Cash When it is most needed

Youve heard of the cash-value component of permanent life insurance. Sounds technical, doesnt it? It isnt.

Al and Elise Martin (names have been changed to protect the familys privacy) were retired and living modestly in the West Coast home that they had occupied for more than 40 rears., when they awoke one morning to a furnace that no longer provided warmth. Al took a look, then, then realizing that something was wrong, called a well-known repair shop. The shop sent out a technician, who informed them that the furnace was beyond repairit would have to be red-tagged for replacement. Al and Elise relied heavily on Social Security for their income. How would they manage to buy a new furnace? No matter, it had to be done. They ordered the new furnace.

When they saw their bill a few weeks later, they were in shock. The repairmans time, the new furnace and the installation

amounted to well over $5,000. The Matins struggled to make payments, but it was beyond what they could afford. Eventually, a lien was placed on their house, and not knowing what else to do, the Martins prepared to sell their home.

When their Knights of Columbus field agent arrived a few weeks later for his annual appointment with them, he was surprised to find the Martins married son carrying the living room sofa down the steps and toward a waiting truck. The Martins explained what had happened, saying they were going to move in with their son for a while until the house was sold and the financial pressure eased.

The agent reminded the Martins about their K of C permanent life insurance policy. The couple stated that they remembered the policy, but didnt see how it could help until one of them passed away.  The rest of the story isnt hard to figure out.  The agent showed them how much cash value had built up in their policy, applied for some of it on their behalf, and shortly after brought them the $5,500 they needed to payoff the furnace and have the lien removed. Their son happily moved the sofa back where it belonged.

The Martins now had a choice to make. They could gradually pay back the cash value they had borrowed, at a small interest rate, until the value of their policy was completely restored.  Or they could keep the money and not pay it back---a viable option which meant only that their eventual death benefit would be reduced by the same amount. The Martins elected to pay back the loan ( at about $350 per year) and keep the full amount of their policy in place.

While the Knights of Columbus offers both term and permanent life insurance, the important thing to remember is that only permanent insurance builds cash value. The alternative, term life insurance, does provide income protection, yes, but it does not build cash value.  Permanent insurance, on the other hand ,gives you lifetime coverage at a fixed rate---and it builds that all-important cash value. Cash value that once its accumulated  ( and provided that you keep the policy in force) can be tapped into at ant time in an emergency.

If you have term life insurance with the Knights of Columbus, I encourage you to convert to a permanent policy.  This is a simple and straightforward process that I will happily handle for you.  Call today to learn more. Lets talk value. Cash Value
